چکیده

This paper describes two-dimensional computer simulations of granular flow in plane hoppers. The simulations can reproduce an experimentally observed asymmetric unsteadiness for monodispersed particle sizes, but also could eliminate it by adding a small amount of polydispersity. This appears to be a result of the strong packings that may be formed by monodispersed particles and is thus a noncontinuum effect. The internal stress state was also sampled, which among other things, allows an evaluation of common assumptions made in granular material models. These showed that the internal friction coefficient is far from a constant, which is in contradiction to common models based on plasticity theory which assume that the material is always at the point of imminent yield. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that rapid granular flow theory, another common modeling technique, is inapplicable to this problem even near the exit where the flow is moving its fastest. © 1996 American Institute of Physics. @S1070-6631~96!00711-8#

Hopper Wall Simulation in ANSYS to Determine Displacement Due to Single Ball Impact

Deformation of the silo wall due to the single ball impact is modeled in ANSYS. The material in silo, as a Winkler bed, is replaced by spring-damper elements and the spring stiffness and damper coefficients are evaluated of the granular material and wall properties. The granular material deformation under the specified force is measured to evaluate the granular stiffness to be used for determin...

Effects of vertical vibration on hopper flows of granular material

The discharge of granular material from a hopper subject to vertical sinusoidal oscillations was investigated using experiments and discrete element computer simulations. With the hopper exit closed, side-wall convection cells are observed, oriented such that particles move up along the inclined walls of the hopper and down at the center line. The convection cells are a result of the granular b...

Development of a convex polyhedral discrete element simulation framework for NVIDIA Kepler based GPUs

Understanding the dynamical behavior of Granular Media (GM) is extremely important to many industrial processes. Thus simulating the dynamics of GM is critical in the design and optimization of such processes. However, the dynamics of GM is complex in nature and cannot be described by a closed form solution for more than a few particles. A popular and successful approach in simulating the under...
